I really didn’t know what to expect from Venice. I had heard stories and seen pictures, but never had the opportunity to explore the city for myself. When we finally got off the ferry into the city, I felt an emotion that only comes with traveling – that awe you feel when you’re finally able to see a city you’ve only dreamed of seeing.
I was not disappointed.
Our first day in Venice was spent roaming the canals and getting a feel of the city. In the morning, we toured the Doge’s Palace – a major landmark in the city of Venice. The Piazza San Marco and the Rialto were both major stops for us throughout the day. We all wound up in a Gondola at some point in the afternoon, only to be wowed by the silence of the water and the complete mastery that the Gondoliers have.
One thing that I was not impressed by: the food. This was a common thread throughout the trip – I was expecting extravagant meals, but was floored when the pizza and pasta we got on a regular basis was nothing short of “meh” (and believe me, we tried A LOT of it). By the time we got back to California, I was desperate for some vegetables.
