In my previous post, I mentioned how I’m obsessed with bleach (again). I go through these phases where I want to just take bleach to everything and anything I can get my hands on. I mean – why not? It’s super cheap and a ridiculously easy way to revamp pieces in your closet.
Step One: Start with a pair of shorts to your liking.
I chose this pair cause they were a little bit larger on me, and I figured I would rather try on these than on a pair that I actually wear on a regular basis. It was a practice run, after all! I bought these as regular shorts from the thrift store. I took some scissors and a box cutter to them to get them to the length and level of distressing that I wanted. I recommend using a pair that is a lighter wash, as then it will be easier to strip the color out of them…
Step Two: Assemble your supplies.
I’m not kidding when I said that this was a super easy and cheap DIY. A carton of bleach will cost you less than $5 – and the shorts were $2.99. You’re going to want to use a tub or a bucket to keep everything in one place – that, or pick a sink in your house that you don’t use on a regular basis.
Step Three: Let dem babies soak.
Soak your shorts in bleach and cold water until they reach the desired color. I wanted white-white shorts, so I left them in the water for almost a full two days (the weekend is a perfect time to try doing this…). Below are a few photos taken throughout the process; you can see how the color fades. At one point, I poured out my water and started fresh – which isn’t a bad idea.
Step Four: Admire the finished product!
I’m SO pleased with how these came out (and I already have another pair soaking in the kitchen sink!) They really are all I want to wear this summer!
