After seeing these Zara babies on what seemed like every blog, I knew I wanted to make myself a pair. I mean, I could always buy them…but where’s the fun in that?!
So after a ton of searching, I finally gave into the idea that a pair of dip dyed shorts may just be an easier task for the time being….since for some reason, a pair of cheap skinnies is incredibly hard to find in my thrift stores these days!
These shorts are incredibly simple to make…scroll down for the tutorial!

So first and foremost, you need a pair of denim to dye. I went with these simple cutoffs I made a few weeks back. Like I said in a past post, I have this habit of just buying jeans and cutting them into shorts, since I know that I’ll probably wind up using them eventually. I had these lying around my house, but they originally cost me $4.99 at the local Goodwill.
A tub and a bucket of bleach are all you really need to do this DIY well. I mixed the bleach with some cold water in the tub, until it was as the desired level. I wanted to make it pretty easy for myself, so I filled the tub about half way.

Put your tub in a sink. It helps keep messes at a minimum. Wet the bottom of your shorts with some clean water and then let your shorts rest at the desired level in the tub. I went about half way…
Notice how the water tends to bleed upwards…be careful to keep your eye on it so it doesn’t get out of control.
Let your shorts sit in the tub for a few hours.

A couple times during the process, I moved the shorts around in the tub, just so the bleach would go evenly around.

Towards the end, I spread them out like this and clipped them to the sides of the tub. I would really recommend doing this, as it helps keep them in place!
Once your shorts are dip dyed the way you like, take them out of the bleach and rinse them with water. I threw them into the washing machine for twenty minutes, and then stuck them in the dryer for ten. I pulled them out, and let them air dry the rest of the way ..
The finished product ::

It’s kind of embarrassing how excited I am about these! I will definitely stay on the lookout for a pair of jeans to experiment with!
What do you think? Is this a project that you would try for yourself?
